Watts Martin on the hassles around the "sandboxed documents" model in IOS, spreading to MacOs X. Mac AppStore applications must be “sandboxed” the way iOS applications are. iOS applications include documents in their sandboxes: a document “owned” by an application can only be seen by that application. If I save a Markdown document in Byword on my iPad, no other iPad application—even if I have dozens of other ones that can handle plain text—can see it, unless I can use “Open in…” from in Byword itself... I’ve argued in the past that the kind of “open” we should really care about is Open Data. It shouldn’t matter whether I’m using Emacs or BBEdit or Byword for text, GIMP or Photoshop or Acorn to edit a PNG file, Alpine or Postbox to access mail on IMAP servers. If all of your meaningful data is open, you seriously reduce the friction inherent in switching applications or even computing Platform-s. (more)

Shannon Brownlee says a number of doctors/researchers doubt The Flu orthodoxy - the effectiveness of the Flu Vaccine and antivirals. What if flu vaccines do not protect people from dying--particularly the elderly, who account for 90 percent of deaths from seasonal flu? And what if the expensive antiviral drugs that the government has stockpiled over the past few years also have little, if any, power to reduce the number of people who die or are hospitalized? (more)

Learning Theory of Jean Piaget. He suggested that through processes of accommodation and assimilation, individuals construct new knowledge from their experiences. Assimilation occurs when individuals' experiences are aligned with their internal representation of the world. They assimilate the new experience into an already existing framework. Accommodation is the process of reframing one's mental representation of the external world to fit new experiences. Accommodation can be understood as the mechanism by which failure leads to learning. When we act on the expectation that the world operates in one way and it violates our expectations, we often fail. By accommodating this new experience and reframing our model of the way the world works, we learn from the experience of failure. (more)
Roger Schank's group is launching their full-year (10th grade?) HealthSciences program, seeking students/schools. Candidates would be those who are too smart for the school system and need something to keep them interested, those who are so tired of school that they were going to Drop Out anyway, or anyone who has a passion for learning about health sciences... While the stated subject matter is health sciences, students are learning, on a daily basis, to communicate with each other, to work in teams, to write effectively, to reason about scientific and ethical issues, and to understand how the real workaday world actually operates. There is business math in the Curriculum but no Algebra or Geome Try. There is plenty of science and plenty of reasoning about social issues. It is writing intensive. HealthCare Vo-Tech? (more)
